One person has died and at least 10 people have been injured after a shooting near the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade, the fire department has said.
The Chiefs’ were celebrating their weekend win against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
Michael Hopkins, of the Kansas City Fire Department, said three people are in a critical condition, five are serious and one is in a non-life-threatening condition.
Police said two armed people were taken into custody after the incident near the Union train station.
Video footage showed a chaotic scene outside the station as officers stormed into the building while people who had been attending the Super Bowl celebration ran for safety.
“Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck,” police said on X.
“We took two armed people into custody for more investigation.”
Police said at the early stage in their investigation, they believe the incident is criminal and not terror related.
The Chief’s star quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared on X: “Praying for Kansas City,” shortly after the incident, while Drue Tranquill, a Chief’s linebacker, asked people to join him in prayer for the victims over “this heinous act”.
Thousands of fans had lined the streets to welcome the winning team to celebrate their third Super Bowl title in five seasons.
Confetti canons exploded from double-decker buses as players rolled through the crowd, while club owner Clark Hunt held up the trophy.

The team then took to the stage to address the crowds, including Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce, who was held up by teammates as he sang to fans.
Love Story singer Swift was absent from the event as she has the first of three scheduled concerts in Melbourne, Australia, on Friday, as part of her Eras Tour.
