VARANASI: A 48-year-old labourer was killed after an SUV allegedly ran over him near the Dalmia Hostel within the Banaras Hindu University campus on Saturday night. Angered by his death, inmates of many hostels went on a rampage and indulged in violence, and until midnight they damaged many vehicles of the varsity proctorial board and police.
Security personnel and policemen also suffered injuries in this brick batting.
ACP Bhelupur Atun Anjan Tripathi said on Sunday that in the case of the killing of Krishna Chand (48), a labourer of Pandey Haveli area, an FIR was lodged with an unidentified SUV owner under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (culpable homicide), and 427 (mischief causing damage). Another FIR was lodged against 12 identified and 200 others under IPC sections 147, 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (criminal force specifically to deter a public servant from performing their duty), 504 (derogatory language to provoke), 506 (criminal intimidation), 452 (trespassing), 283 (obstruction in public way), ¾ of prevention of damage to public property act and 7 criminal law amendment act in connection with violence that marred the varsity campus, the ACP added, saying the situation had been pacified by 12.30 am.
All the varsity proctorial board personnel and policemen, who suffered injuries, were sent to hospital for first aid. The ACP added that many vehicles, including his official vehicle, were also damaged by protesters, who also entered the lawns of the vice chancellor’s lodge and tried to ransack it. During investigation, it came to light that Chandra had gone to meet his mother-in-law, who works as a domestic helper. Around 9 pm, he was returning home on his bicycle when a speeding SUV hit him near Dalmia hostel on the varsity campus. He fell on the road after suffering grave injuries when the SUV occupant tried to drag him inside the vehicle. However, before he could succeed, inmates of the Dalmia hostel reached there. Sensing danger, the SUV driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle abandoned. On getting information, Lanka cops reached the spot and rushed the injured Chandra to a trauma centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. On getting information about Chandra’s death, students went on a rampage.
Initially, they damaged the SUV and then started indulging in violent protests on the varsity road and also at the BHU main gate at Lanka.
Many senior officers, including DCP Kashi zone Pramod Kumar, reached the spot and tried to convince the protesters to return to their hostel rooms by assuring them that the driver and owner of the killer vehicle would be nabbed soon. However, as they continued their protest and also tried to break into the V-C lodge, more police force was deployed on the campus.
