It is official now. Moana is back at the seas with Maui and will soon be seen on the big screens for Thanksgiving this year.
Along with the announcement Disney also unveiled Moana 2’s first look and teaser. The 16-second-long teaser video opens with a similar setting of a coastal region where Moana lives. The pastel colours of the sky reflect on the waters, with an island at a distance. Soon the scene shifts to Moana, dipping her feet in the sand as the waves crash against the shore. She blows into a conch shell. A boat is waiting for her and she looks like she is ready for another sea-faring adventure.
In the first look, Moana braves the ocean waters with demigod Maui. Beneath them, there is an enormous whale.
Originally planned as a television series, the movie finds Moana journeying on a dangerous mission to the far seas of Oceania after getting a call from her ancestors. It is, Walt Disney Company said, “an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui,” Iger said in a statement.
Moana 2, according to Disney, will give the audiences “an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Dave Derrick Jr. is directing the sequel, with music from the duo of Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film.
Auli’i Cravalho, who lent her voice to Moana, will return for the sequel along with Dwayne Johnson, who gave voice to Maui.
Moana will also have a live-action remake but Auli’i Cravalho will not be seen in the movie. Talking about the live-action movie, she said on Instagram, “I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. I can’t wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength.”
Moana 2 will hit theatres on November 27, 2024.
