Spanco probe: MACC chief denies accusing Muhyiddin of misconduct – MASHAHER

MERSING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied accusing former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of being involved in misconduct related to the awarding of government vehicle supply and maintenance contracts to Spanco Sdn Bhd.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that his previous statement about summoning more individuals, including a former prime minister, was made based on the probability that it would help the investigation linked to Spanco Sdn Bhd.

“I was asked whether he (Muhyiddin) would be called for questioning, and I merely said that we are not ruling out that possibility.

“At the same time, I am also depending on our investigating officers for information, so this is just one of many possibilities that might happen.

“So I am not making any assumptions (of Muhyiddin’s involvement). If he is needed in the investigation, I would leave the decision with our officers to call him up,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after the Mersing District Office anti-corruption pledge and Mersing MACC office launch ceremony at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim here on Sunday (Feb 25).

Azam added that the investigation into Spanco is still ongoing, and a few witnesses have been called up, including the former finance minister at the time.

He said this when asked to comment about Muhyiddin’s statement denying allegations of involvement in misconduct related to the awarding of government vehicle supply and maintenance contracts to Spanco.

Earlier, Azam was reported saying that the MACC has not ruled out summoning more individuals, including a former prime minister, to facilitate the probe linked to Spanco.

The investigation into Spanco was still ongoing, with a focus on contracts signed between 2020 and 2021.

On Feb 23, Muhyiddin, in a statement posted on his Facebook account, said that there have been cruel allegations made against him that have been circulated on the news and social media.

“It’s the same as previous accusations that I allegedly embezzled hundreds of billions of ringgit of national money, but until now it couldn’t be proven by those who accused me,” he said.
