Police probe death of prisoner after fire in cell – MASHAHER

A prisoner in Western Australia has died after being found unconscious in his prison cell when a fire broke out.

The 27-year-old inmate died in hospital after a fire in his cell at Hakea Prison south of Perth about 6.15pm on Tuesday.

The man, the sole occupant of the cell, was found unresponsive by prison officers who provided first aid before paramedics arrived and transported him to hospital.

He later died in Fiona Stanley Hospital.

Another prisoner was treated by prison medical staff after smoke spread through the unit but was cleared to remain in prison.

WA Police will investigate the circumstances of the fire and death and prepare a report for the coroner.

The state’s justice department will also conduct an internal inquiry.
