The momentum for the Republican nomination for the 2024 election has long been with Donald Trump and Super Tuesday results so far have only further confirmed that.
Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley is challenging the former president in the Republican primary in Vermont, where the vote count remains effectively tied but otherwise, the former president has been sweeping the coast-to-coast contests on Super Tuesday.
Trump has now won the Republican primaries in Minnesota, Texas, Alabama, Colorado, Maine, Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas and Massachusetts.
There had been hopes for Haley in Virginia and Maine, which have large swaths of moderate voters like those who have backed her in previous primaries.
And while he has no serious challengers Joe Biden will be enjoying what has been a rather straightforward Super Tuesday.
So far, Biden has won Texas, Minnesota, Alabama, Colorado, Maine, Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Vermont and Iowa.
The results come after tens of thousands of voters last week in Michigan marked “uncommitted” on their ballot paper as Biden won the Democratic primary race in that state but faced a sizeable protest vote over his support for Israel.
The result cast doubt about his ability to maintain the coalition he needs to fend off Donald Trump in critical swing states.
