WITH Hari Raya just over a month away, it is natural that people will be thinking about the festive season to come, especially when it comes to the finances of their festive season. Recently, a post went viral on social media saying that the government is organising a special aid programme for Ramadan as part of Budget 2024. The post urged people to click on a link to check their status.
Is it true that such a special aid programme is in the works?
Verdict:
FALSE
In a post on their official X account, the Finance Ministry denied that it was organising any such programme.
“The Finance Ministry affirms that the claim that it is organising a Ramadan Aid 2024 is false,” it said in the post.
“Be careful and don’t be easily fooled by such news on social media,” it added.
The viral post was most likely part of a ‘phishing attack’ where scammers use social engineering to try to deceive people into revealing sensitive information or installing malware such as ransomware.
In this case the scammers were trying to get victims to click on the links provided in the post.
