The Delhi Government has decided to convene a special session of the assembly on March 15 to discuss the issue of water contamination and sewer problems in the national capital. The assembly passed a resolution also directing the Chief Secretary to resolve the complaints within a week and asked him to present a progress report in person during the special session.
AAP MLA Dilip Pandey presented the resolution in the House, stating that the Chief Secretary should be given a week’s time to solve the problems related to overflowing sewers and contaminated water in the national capital. He also proposed that the Chief Secretary should be directed to present in the House on March 15 at 11 am.
“This House resolves that this issue has come up in the House representing two crore people of Delhi, indicating that the problem of dirty water and sewerage is prevalent in many parts of the city. The responsibility for its execution rests with the Water Board. People continuously shared their problems on the Jal Board portal, but they could not be solved. People are enduring inhuman conditions in Delhi,” the resolution passed by the assembly noted.
The House resolved that the Chief Secretary would be responsible for solving these problems. During the next week, the top bureaucrat should provide status reports to the Water Minister every day, as further directed by the resolution.
“Next Friday, March 15, a session of the House should be convened at 11 am, and the Chief Secretary should come here and provide information about the steps taken to solve these problems,” MLA Dilip Pandey stated in the House.
Water Minister Atishi also emphasised that complaints from people regarding overflowing sewers and contaminated water should be addressed urgently.
“I am continuously receiving complaints related to water and sewer problemsâæ Yesterday, within just 24 hours, I received 80 complaints via email. The Jal Board has more than ten thousand complaints on its portal,” the minister noted.
She added that she had instructed the officials to inspect the ground situation and said, “But it is a matter of shame that not a single report from the Jal Board CEO has come in two months.”
“I forwarded all the 80 complaints that came to me to the Chief Secretary and gave him the responsibility to solve the problems himself and submit a report. Also, in case of major problems, a status report should be provided within a week,” the minister said as she supported the resolution presented by Pandey.
Atishi also stressed that the Chief Secretary should be instructed to take action against the officers responsible for these issues.
The proceedings of the ongoing Budget session of the Delhi Assembly have been adjourned until 11 am on March 15.
