BUKIT JALIL: Tenaga Nasional successfully claimed their treble after defeating Terengganu 4-2 in the TNB Cup final.
Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) winners Tenaga came out of the gates strong at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, gaining two penalty corners within nine minutes but failing to convert them.
That gave Terengganu the chance to counter-attack and take the lead heading into the second quarter, courtesy of Faizal Saari’s field goal in the 10th minute.
The second quarter saw the game’s momentum pick up, with Tenaga’s Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi equalising and keeping his side in the game.
But Terengganu went ahead once again, with Akhimullah Anuar Esook scoring a field goal in the 21st minute past Tenaga keeper Hairi Abdul Rahman.
Tenaga had a quick answer to that before the half-time mark when veteran Jang Jong-hyun showed his expertise, making it 2-2 by converting a penalty corner in the 22nd minute.
In the second half, Tenaga was hungry for more, and they got lucky when a shot towards goal was deflected into the goal by Terengganu captain Sukri Mutalib, making it 3-2 for Tenaga.
Tenaga seemed to be in charge of the game, holding possession better than their opponents. However, they eventually gave way to Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal, who made it 4-2 for Tenaga before the final quarter.
Despite their best efforts to claw their way back, Terengganu could not break through Tenaga’s defence as the final quarter ended without a goal, leaving Tenaga overjoyed as they claimed the elusive treble win.
