PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah claimed a sensational win over China’s world No. 1 Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan to book a spot in the last eight of the All-England.
World No. 15 Pearly-Thinaah had never beaten Qingchen-Yifan before in any of their past five meetings in international competitions but rose to the occasion magnificently to stun the Chinese duo 22-20, 21-16 in 49 minutes in the second round at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on Thursday (March 14).
Pearly-Thinaah now have a good opportunity to reach their first-ever semi-final in the prestigious tournament.
Standing in their way in the last eight will be Japan’s world No. 11 Rena Miyaura-Ayako Sakuramoto.
Meanwhile, there was no joy for mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie after they lost 12-21, 5-21 to China’s Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping.
