Scottie Scheffler may have walked away with the winner’s prize of £3.5million ($4.5m) for the second consecutive year at the Players Championship, but Matt Fitzpatrick also took home a healthy payday after his sensational run to end his round on Sunday.

The Englishman looked to have moved himself into contention to win the prestigious tournament with back-to-back birdies on holes one and two on Sunday.

But he was unable to build on that start with three bogeys before the turn as he slipped down the leaderboard.

Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele and Brian Harman had all moved clear of Fitzpatrick towards the end of his round.

That appeared to free up any pressure Fitzpatrick was feeling though as he finished with a flourish to end the tournament on a high.

And with it came a huge bump in the pay cheque he took home from TPC Sawgrass.

Fitzpatrick was sat on 12-under par for the tournament after his par on the 14th and had he finished on that score than he would have taken home £476,000 ($606,250).

But the 29-year-old went on a charge in the final four holes with four consecutive birdies to climb up the leaderboard.

That quick flurry ended up helping Fitzpatrick nearly double his prize money for the week.

He ended up finishing fifth and earning just over £800,000 ($1m) for his performance.

Fitzpatrick now sits 67th on the all-time list for career earnings on the PGA Tour.

The 2022 US Open champion has earned a whopping £18.7m ($23.8m) throughout his career having turned pro 10 years ago.

But Fitzpatrick still has some way to go to catch Tiger Woods, who comfortably sits top for career earnings in the PGA Tour.

The 15-time major winner has earned an incredible £95m ($120m) from his illustrious career having clinched 82 titles on the PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy is Woods’ closest challenger on the money list with the Northern Irishman earning £63m ($80m).

Scheffler jumped up the money list with his Players Championship victory and has now earned £42m ($53m) in his career.

There is more money on offer in the PGA Tour this year than ever before and that’s only expected to grow even further following a multi-billion investment from a US consortium.

The deal was agreed while the PGA Tour are still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund to try and bring an end to golf’s civil war with LIV.

Discussions are now taking place between LIV chief Yasir Al-Rumayyan and the PGA Tour Policy Board members including Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.

The meeting is said to be taking place in the Bahamas where Woods hosts his annual golf tournament, the Hero World Challenge.
