BENGALURU: Karnataka-based Janata Dal (Secular) received Rs 41 crore through electoral bonds. In a clear indication that companies and individuals bought EBs more for the party in govt, JD(S) received as much as 40% (or Rs 35.5 crore of the Rs 89.8 crore in donations it got over the past six years) between May 2018 and April 2019 when its leader, HD Kumaraswamy, was CM of a JD(S)-Congress coalition govt.
While JD(S), in a disclosure in 2023, had declared it received Rs 89.8 crore, fresh details push the number higher.
Among the biggest contributors to JD(S) were Nara Constructions & Rithwik Projects, with Rs 10 crore each, followed by ILABS HYD Technologies and KCR Enterprises, which contributed Rs 5 crore each. Other contributors are Sigma Advanced Systems, Nimba Biotech and Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL).
The biggest donation received by JD(S) was from MEIL, which contributed at least 66% of its total contributions from EBs. MEIL gave JD(S) Rs 50 crore, of which Rs 10 crore was given when the party was in govt, and another Rs 40 crore prior to the 2023 polls.
MEIL is followed by Embassy Group, which contributed Rs 22 crore. Interestingly, almost the entire Embassy Group’s EB contributions were made to JD(S) just before or after the 2018 assembly elections with the regional party pegged to be “kingmaker”, and then becoming “king”.
Others that contributed to the partyu include Shankarnarayana Constructions, Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Infosys Technologies, Shahi Exports, Amara Raja Group, & Aditya Birla Group.
