Appiah placed third in the season-long monobob standings last year, reaching five podiums across eight starts.
Last off-season, though, she returned to athletics after a 10-year absence, eventually placing third at Canadian nationals in shot put with a throw of 14.84 metres.
Action from Lake Placid continues Friday with the two-man bobsleigh heats slated for 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ET on CBCSports.ca, the CBC Sports app and CBC Gem.
