Cowboys vs. Dragons, Todd Payten, Jason Taumalolo plays 21 minutes, why is that, usage, knee injury, press conference, reaction – MASHAHER

The Cowboys’ usage of Jason Taumalolo has once again been queried during the team’s post-match press conference after the star forward only played 21 minutes in the team’s 46-24 win against the Dragons.

Taumalolo has started all three games this season, but has played a total of just 91 minutes (21 in Round 1, 49 in Round 2, 21 in Round 3).

Payten revealed last week that Taumalolo has “some degenerative cartilage in his knee”, hence the managed load.

The Cowboys coach stressed that due to this issue and the miles in Taumalolo’s legs after 255 NRL games, he would continue to carefully manage the veteran forward’s minutes.

The fact that the Cowboys built a huge lead against the Dragons – much like they did against the Dolphins in Round 1 – played a factor as well.

“Well it won’t be the last time if we are up by 28 points,” Payten said.

“It’s a six day turnaround again so the world of rugby league needs to know that this is going to happen again if we are this far in front.

“Whether it’s a six or seven day turnaround, this kid is playing his 15th year of first grade. He’s got a regenerative knee complaint.

“We’re just doing our best to look after him.”

When pressed by a journalist if it’s about using Taumalolo “as effectively as possible”, Payten’s response was brief.

“Correct,” he said.

“With all our middle forwards, if they aren’t moving great or not winning tackles that’s when we look to make the change.

“Jase will play in two stints like all of our middles you know? Yeah, we just make those changes on the basis of how they are moving and tackling.”

Whispers over Taumalolo’s future at the club went into overdrive in the off-season when Payten stripped the forward and halfback Chad Townsend of the club captaincy in favour of Reuben Cotter and Tom Dearden.

Taumalolo is in the seventh season of a mega 10-year deal which expires at the end of 2027.

Other clubs have reportedly inquired over Taumalolo’s availability, but the Cowboys have so far rejected the notion he’s going elsewhere.

“I knew this narrative would happen once the (leadership) call was made. It is predictable and somewhat amusing really,” Payten said before the start of the season.

“But I can assure you of this – Jason will not be at any other club. That won’t happen on my watch. He is happy here and staying here.

“Whoever is pushing this agenda is off the mark. It’s laughable to be honest.”
