A woman has been saved from a sinking car after crashing into a creek on Sydney’s northern beaches.
Emergency services responded to reports a car had left the road and crashed into Dee Why Lagoon just after 12.30am on Sunday.
A 60-year-old woman was found inside the vehicle, which was quickly taking on water.
Probationary Constable Kiesha McJannet entered the water to free the woman from the car, which sank soon after she was released.
The 60-year-old was examined by paramedics before being taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for observation and remains there to recover.
Acting Inspector Adrian De Visser praised the efforts of Const McJannet, who has been with NSW Police for less than a year.
“Her selfless actions of entering the water and saving a woman from a precarious position is deserving of praise,” Insp Visser said.
The vehicle remains submerged and salvage crews will attempt to retrieve it later on Sunday.
