Moore Park Golf Club has an unlikely new ally in American actor Mark Wahlberg, who has filmed a video “pleading” with Sydneysiders to save the 100-year-old golf club ahead of plans to halve it in size.

The golf course will shrink from 18 holes to 9 and the remaining land will be turned into a new central park in an attempt to provide green space to residents around Green Square, Zetland and Waterloo as housing becomes denser in the area, the state government announced last year.

In a video on Saturday, an impassioned Wahlberg acknowledged he was not a citizen of Australia but asked those who were to “save Moore Park Golf Club”.

“It’s been here for over 100 years, it’s been giving people hundreds and hundreds of years of pleasure and joy,” the Shooter star said in a video filmed on the course on Saturday afternoon.

“Just people being able to come out and get a nice healthy walk, spend quality time together with family and friends.

“Please, I’ve seen lots and lots of parks and I haven’t seen too many lovely public golf courses like this that have access for everybody. Please save Moore Park Golf Club.”

An avid golfer, Wahlberg is in Sydney to film the Amazon crime series Play Dirty.

Defending the controversial decision last year, Premier Chris Minns asked golfers to note “there are a lot of golf courses in Sydney and we’re not taking over all of them”, he said.
