Kiplimo, Chebet win cross-country athletics world titles in Serbia – MASHAHER


Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo and Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet won the senior men’s and women’s titles at the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships on Saturday in Belgrade, Serbia. 

Kiplimo took the men’s championship win in 28 minutes and nine seconds, just ahead of Berihu Aregawi of Ethiopia (28:12) and Benson Kiplangat of Kenya (28:14).

Philippe Morneau-Cartier of La Pocatière, Que., was the top Canadian finisher in 41st position, crossing the line in 30:04. 

In other Canadian men’s results,  Andrew Davies of Sarnia, Ont. (30:27) was 57th, Thomas Fafard of Repentigny, Que.  (30:44) was 63rd; Max Turek of Whitby, Ont. (30:49) was 67th; and Mike Tate of Antigonish, N.S. was 80th (32:24).

Chebet led a Kenyan sweep of the women’s podium, finishing in 31:05, while Lilian Kasait Rengeruk (31:08) was second, and  Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi (31:09) was third.

Glynis Sim of Salmon Arm, B.C. (34:37) was the top Canadian in 38th spot. 

Leslie Sexton of Markham, Ont. (34:55) was 42nd, Victoria’s Katelyn Ayers (35:04) was 44th, Kate Bazeley of St. John’s (35:17) was 50th; and Toronto’s Mikaela Lucki (35:42) was 54th.
