Drivers warned of major road improvements set to disrupt travel in North England – MASHAHER

Drivers in North England have been warned of travel disruptions as a 13-week project to improve road conditions gets ready to begin.

A total of £3.5million is being set aside to improve the road conditions in Yorkshire as cars face challenging journeys due to potholes, uneven surfaces and damaged lanes.

The work is being carried out by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and will begin on April 16 and is expected to take 13 weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

The work will cover all types of roads, from A roads to unclassified roads with 139 sections of roads estimated to undergo improvements. This is equivalent to around 69 miles in total.

Temporary 20mph speed limits will be in place

GETTY

Residents and drivers will be sent a leaflet informing them of the planned road disruptions with advance warning signs being put up beforehand.

During and after the work temporary 20mph speed limits will be in force.

This is to reduce the possibility of vehicles skidding on the loose chippings which will be removed when the new road markings have been installed.

While the council hopes to minimise disruption to traffic drivers have been asked to respect the 20mph speed limit which will be in place.

Around 13,400 tonnes of stone chippings will be laid on road surfaces adding additional layers of protection ahead of the Winter season.

Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Our annual surface dressing plays a vitally important role in protecting the East Riding’s roads and defending against potholes and other damage.

“Our teams will be working in more than 100 locations across the area this spring and summer and we’d like to thank residents and motorists for bearing with us while this work is carried out.”

Roads in England have been slowly deteriorating with urgent care needed for them to remain viable travel options.

Across the UK, some roads have not been repaired for more than 100 years, with drivers being warned of expensive costs associated with the lack of progress.

It’s up to local authorities to repair road damage but due to lack of funding and support, many crucial roads across both England and Wales have remained untouched for decades.

It is estimated that 107,000 miles of roads are fast reaching the end of their lives, with urgent care needed before it’s too late.

The council stated that every two years it will hire a giant industrial washing and grading machine to clean all the loose chippings from the road so they can be recycled and reused.
