Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha and a billionaire entrepreneur, has a piece of advice for fellow entrepreneurs in India: instead of focusing on opening franchises of global brands in India, consider taking Indian brands global.
Kamath believes that the Indian narrative, with its rich history, royalty, mystique, and craftsmanship, is resonating globally.
“To all my entrepreneur buddies, the future may be to take Indian brands global, not franchise global brands in India. The Indian narrative is getting cool globally, we have mystique, royalty, history, artisan, handmade, exotic, and so much more to sellâæ” he said in a recent post on X.
Kamath pointed out the shift in naming local-manufactured garments from generic Western names like “John, Peter, and Louis” to uniquely Indian brands such as Subko and Hatti Kaapi.
He highlighted the potential for these brands to be marketed abroad, with the faces of Indian artisans who put their time and effort into each product.
“What was yesterday a garment manufactured in India called John, Peter, and Louis something and marketed by western models, could be tom Subko, Hatti Kaapi, 11.11 etc sold in New York with the faces of Indian artisans who spent hours on each product individuallyâæ” he said.
In a previous post, Kamath highlighted the significant transformation in India’s entrepreneurship and startup ecosystem over the past decade, evolving from a mere possibility to a concrete reality.
