Aamir Khan’s son Junaid is all set to make his grand debut as a lead actor in Yash Raj Films’ OTT film and two more films made by Aamir Khan Productions. Yet, he’s not taking things lying down and is trying his best to improve his acting skills. This endeavour led him to be a part of an entertaining and experimental play, Shikhandi. The drama was staged yesterday at Mumbai’s iconic Prithvi Theatre twice in the day. Bollywood Hungama was a part of one of the performances in the audience.
EXCLUSIVE: Aamir Khan’s son Junaid rocks the show as Drupada and Bhishma in the entertaining mythological play, Shikhandi
What stands out initially is that though Junaid Khan is the most popular and is the son of a star, in the play, he’s treated as an equal. In all, 8 actors are there and all get equal prominence. Junaid was not given a starry treatment and it’s a factor that impressed one and all. The play is unconventional – from the writing to the kind of costumes worn by the actors, especially the male ones. Yet, Junaid Khan shed all his inhibitions and went all out.
The play Shikhandi is set in the era of Mahabharata. Amba is abducted by Bhishma at a swayamwar and later spurned by him. She prays to Lord Shiva for revenge. She is reborn as Shikhandi who becomes a biological male, after which he exacts revenge. The writing is solid and the use of English and a few Marathi and Hindi dialogues along with cuss words and terms like ‘anti-national’ gives a contemporary and humourous feel to the play. At the same time, the tagline reads ‘The Story Of The In-Betweens’ and it delivers a powerful message in support of the trans community.
All actors play multiple characters in the drama. Junaid Khan plays Bhishma and later, he also essays the role of Shikhandi and Draupadi’s father, Drupada. On the poster, his name is mentioned third. The other actors in the play are Meher Acharia-Dar, Karan Desai, Akash Ghosalkar, Faezeh Jalali, Tushar Pandey, Abhishek Saha and Srishti Srivastava. Faezeh Jalali is also the director and writer of the play. Tushar Pandey has earlier been seen in the film Chhichhore (2019), the popular OTT show Aashram, etc. Along with Junaid, all other actors do well and special mention should go to Srishti Srivastava. As Amba and Draupadi, she played to the gallery and was a crowd favourite.
Junaid Khan’s debut film, Maharaj, is all set to release on Netflix this year. It is also the debut digital release of Yash Raj Films. He’ll be then seen in two films produced by his father – one co-starring Sai Pallavi and the other reportedly starring Khushi Kapoor opposite him.
Junaid Khan has been doing theatre for almost 6 years. Last year, he was seen in another experimental play, Strictly Unconventional, which was also directed by Faezeh Jalali. In Strictly Unconventional, Junaid plays a character who is transitioning from a male to a female.
