Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is staring down the barrel of a stint on the sidelines after bringing down Bulldogs winger Josh Addo-Carr with a textbook hip-drop tackle on Friday night.

Papenhuyzen will do extremely well to avoid a suspension from the match review committed following the 32nd minute incident which went undetected at the time.

Rookie NRL referee Wyatt Raymond likely missed it because Addo-Carr immediately bounced back to his feet.

But the replays make for ugly viewing and similar tackles have seen NRL players suspended for several weeks in recent years.

“Ryan Papenhuyzen got this very, very wrong on Josh Addo-Carr,” Fox League expert Yvonne Sampson said.

“It’s so hard, he’s coming across, there’s no malice in that at all,” Mick Ennis responded.

“He’s trying to save the try there because had Addo-Carr got on his outside (he would have scored). He just loses his legs, lands on the back of his leg, it’s a hip-drop.

“It got tipped in from the Bunker and there might be some questions for Papenhuyzen to answer and it will be disappointing for Melbourne (if he’s suspended).”

James Graham joked he’d never know what it’s like to run as quickly as Papenhuyzen did in defence, but agreed it was a hip-drop tackle.

He also referenced a tackle from Victor Radley last weekend that was nowhere near as bad but saw the Roosters lock binned.

“I don’t know what it’s like to experience running that quickly, but it is a hip-drop,” Graham said.

“And I know (Roosters) coach Trent Robinson, and Victor Radley, will be watching this and going ‘well what happened last week’.

“The reason Papenhuyzen doesn’t go to the bin here is Josh Addo-Carr, that he gets straight back up.”
