KOTA KINABALU: A 30-year-old man who allegedly set fire to a car in Sipitang has been arrested, several hours after the incident occurred on Saturday (April 13).
Beaufort OCPD Deputy Supt Ismail Abdullah said the suspect is believed to have entered the compound of a house belonging to a woman, threw an object into her car before fleeing in a vehicle.
“The woman just arrived home and went into her house, without noticing the suspect,” he said in a statement on Monday (April 15).
He said the woman’s brother-in-law claimed he saw the suspect running into the house compound, opening her car door and throwing an object into the vehicle before fleeing.
Upon checking he saw that the driver’s seat, seatbelt, steering wheel and dashboard were on fire,” said DSP Ismail, adding that the losses incurred were about RM20,000.
He said a police report was lodged and the suspect was picked up from a house in Sipitang at around 6.30pm on Saturday (April 13).
DSP Ismail said the suspect admitted that he set the car on fire.
He said the suspect has been remanded for seven days until April 21 to facilitate an investigation under Section 436 of the Penal Code for causing mischief by fire.
