Slain Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, who inspired Imtiaz Ali’s latest Netflix film, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, had a son, Jainam Chamkila, with his second wife and singing partner Amarjot Kaur. Jainam, in one of his earlier interviews, spoke about his relationship with his father’s first wife, Gurnail Kaur, and his stepsisters. He said that he and his stepsisters sometimes share their pain.
In a 2023 interview with Cine Punjabi, Jainam said he sometimes talks to his Chamkila’s first wife, Gurnail, and stepsisters, Amandeep and Kamaldeep. “Sometimes we speak and she would say that if your father was around, we wouldn’t be in such a state. He worked hard, people’s evil eyes impacted him, and he had too many enemies. I have my sisters as well. We try to share our pain as much as we can,” Jainam said.
Imtiaz’s film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, starring Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role, chronicles the life of the Punjabi singer, who became a popular name in the Punjabi music industry before he was murdered in 1988. His wife Amarjot Kaur was also killed by unidentified men. The couple had two sons, one of whom died 15 days after his parents’ death.
Jainam, the elder son of Chamkila and Amarjot, also said he has a cordial relationship with his stepmother. “I am in touch with Chamkila’s first family. I have two sisters from his first wife, Amandeep and Kamaldeep. The older one is married and has two kidsâæ When I go meet her (his stepmother), she greets me well, but that’s it. From the beginning, it’s been this way. It is not her fault nor our (the children) fault,” he was quoted as saying in the video.
Jainam Chamkila is also a singer like his father. Imtiaz Ali shared in his film that Jainam sometimes even dresses like his late father.
