IPL 2024: Good pitch, but average batting: Frustrated Shubman Gill explains GT flop show vs DC – MASHAHER

GT were thrashed by DC at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, 17 April. Opting to bowl first in the game, DC pacers dominated the show and helped bowl out GT for just 89 runs. Both openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha were dismissed cheaply in the powerplay from which the home side failed to recover. GT were bowled out in just 17.3 overs just one of their top-order batters crossing double digits.

Shubman Gill spoke about the horrific batting of the side and in the post-match presentation confirmed that the pitch did not play any part in the team’s downfall. Gill blamed himself and the other batters for some ‘very average’ batting and said that the team needed to move on very quickly from the defeat.

“Our batting performance was very average, but I guess we need to move on. Even if we had a good game, it’s important for us to move on from this match and maintain the same mindset for the next one. We need to come back and try again. I think the wicket was all right, to be honest. If you look at our dismissals, the way I got out and even the way Wridhi bhai got out had nothing to do with the pitch. Sai got run out. So I don’t think there was anything wrong with the pitch. It was simply a case of bad batting performance and poor shot selection I would say,” a frustrated Shubman Gill said.

GT’S NRR PLUMMETS

GT’s NRR took a massive hit after the loss and they were leapfrogged by DC in the IPL points table. GT are currently sitting in the 7th spot in the league table with 6 points from 7 matches. The captain signed off by saying that GT have to win 5 matches from their next 7 so that they can maintain their record of reaching the IPL playoffs every season.

Gujarat will next play Punjab on 21 April away from home. PBKS have already defeated GT once this season.
