Australia have failed to qualify for the men’s football tournament at the Olympic Games in Paris after the Olyroos drew a blank against Qatar in their final group game of the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup.
Australia pressed for much of the match and created a series of chances, but – as in their previous matches – they were unable to make those chances count.
To progress in the tournament and keep their Paris 2024 hopes alive, Australia needed to beat Qatar and then hope that Jordan beat Indonesia by fewer goals in the other group game of the day.
In the end, Indonesia’s 4-1 drubbing of Jordan was of little consequence as the Olyroos failed to make it onto the scoresheet in Doha, drawing nil-all with the hosts.
Qatar and Indonesia progress from the group into the quarter-finals with the top three in the event qualifying for Paris.
The result means the Matildas are left to fly the flag for Australia as the country’s only football team in Paris.
