2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Weekly Commentary (Updated: April 25, 2024): Icon Meryl Streep boasts an impressive track record with three Primetime Emmy Awards to her name. She clinched the lead actress (limited) accolade twice for her performances in “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2003), and also secured the outstanding narrator award for “Five Came Back” (2017). Her portrayal of Loretta Durkin, a struggling Broadway actress in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” has swiftly positioned her as the leading contender, according to many industry pundits.

Yet, the third season of HBO/Max’s “Hacks” presents a formidable contender in the form of two-time nominee Hannah Einbinder, who shines in her role as comedy writer Ava Daniels. Currently topping the charts and with the potential for the series to challenge the inarguable frontrunner status of “The Bear,” Einbinder could very well bring her co-star Meg Stalter along for the ride.

Both Einbinder and Streep could benefit from potential vote-splitting among the talented actresses from ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” — Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Lisa Ann Walter — as well as FX’s “The Bear” — Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon. Who are all fighting for one of the seven (or eight) slots, dependant on submission totals.

Additionally, there’s a chance for cast members of “Saturday Night Live” to make a surprise entry into the lineup, given their standout performances during the 49th season. Notably, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, and Sarah Sherman have all left their mark in their respective episodes.

And never count out established legends always threatening to take a spot such as the “Palm Royale” duo, multiple-time Emmy winners Carol Burnett and Allison Janney.

Meanwhile, there are veteran performers like comedian Susie Essman, whose memorable contributions have yet to receive Emmy recognition. Despite her notable roles, including her work on HBO/Max’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and in “Broad City,” Essman remains overlooked by the Emmy voters. Time for that to change?
