Indian cricket fans were left with mixed feelings about Prithvi Shaw being left out of the DC playing XI facing MI in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, on April 27 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Despite Shaw’s impressive form in the ongoing season of the competition, the usual opener was replaced by Kumar Kushagra in the XI. Some of the fans have gone on to criticise the call by DC on social media, raising questions about the reason behind Shaw’s axing. Shaw was previously left out of the DC team for their first couple of matches in their IPL 2024 campaign, but made an emphatic return to the side with his 43 (27) knock against CSK on March 31.
Since DC captain Rishabh Pant revealed the absence of Shaw at the toss, social media has been flooded with fans taking to their social media handles to give their take on the call. This was only amped up when Shaw was seen sharing a warm hug with MI’s Rohit Sharma ahead of the two sides’ clash on Saturday. Shaw has managed 185 runs in his 7 appearances in IPL 2024 so far, which also includes one half-century in his 66 (40) knock in DC’s previous match against MI on April 7.

With both DC going with an entirely new opening duo after David Warner getting dropped was their last match against GT, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel gave their side a flying start against MI by collectively managing 92 runs in the powerplay. The formidable form of McGurk will only put further pressure on Shaw’s place in the DC team.
