Kamal Haasan recently shared insights into his perspective on materialistic desires during a candid conversation with his daughter Shruti Haasan. During the heartfelt exchange, Shruti posed a question to her father, asking about a desire he hadn’t yet realised. Kamal Haasan reflected on his upbringing and the evolution of his desires.
Kamal Haasan speaks about Shah Rukh Khan’s dream of buying a plane: “I felt happy seeing him because he still has a list”
He said, “There are a lot of those, a lot. My intention is not to list all of them. Listening to them makes you go ‘I want this, that, and this.’ That’s when I remind myself, at Eldams Road (where his old family home is situated), my father gave me a small room that could perhaps fit two pianos. It was on the top floor… so, the heat! The restroom was three floors down. My father’s attitude was, ‘You know a lot so stay here. When you think you can’t go on like this, tell me and I will buy you a cow that you can rear’.”
He further added, “Now, when I have the wealth to buy all of those things, I wonder ‘What do I want? A plane?’ I recently watched an interview of Shar Rukh (Khan). He said he wants to buy a plane. I felt happy seeing him because he still has a list. Personally, I feel, I shouldn’t have any list. I am not trying to become ascetic.”
Intriguingly, the veteran actor highlighted his desire to maintain a sense of purpose and joy in his work. Referencing the Japanese concept of Ikigai, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate creatively. Sharing a recent experience of composing a song with renowned artists AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam, he stated the intrinsic satisfaction derived from the creative process itself, rather than the tangible outcomes.
Speaking of the professional front, Kamal has two big projects in his kitty, including Indian 2 and Kalki 2898 AD.
