HKSAR gov’t underpins all-out efforts to cope with impacts of rainstorm – MASHAHER


HONG KONG, May 4 (Xinhua) — A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said on Saturday evening that persistent rainstorm has caused flooding and landslides in various areas of Hong Kong, with various departments responding promptly to make every effort to minimize the impacts of heavy rain.

Hong Kong issued a red rainstorm warning signal on Saturday at 8:55 a.m. local time, which was canceled in the afternoon.

The spokesperson said, by 7:30 p.m., all 16 flooding cases had been resolved, and the operation of affected roads has mostly been resumed. A total of 15 reports of landslides in Sai Kung area of Hong Kong were received, and inspections to the reported locations were immediately carried out and necessary slope emergency works were arranged.

The spokesperson said that in face of the rainstorm, the Transport Department, the Highways Department, the Police, and other departments responded quickly. Regarding the roads in Sai Kung district closed earlier due to severe flooding, most of them were reopened in a short period of time and the traffic has resumed.

By 7 p.m. local time, the Fire Services Department handled 25 reports of people trapped in lifts and 71 reports from automatic fire alarm systems, with 14 people evacuated. By 8 p.m. local time, the HKSAR government received 22 reports of fallen trees with no injuries.
