MUMBAI: The BMC on Saturday said that an alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS) with regards to high swell waves which were expected to occur in the sea over a period of 36 hours.
Therefore an appeal was made by the civic body to citizens to refrain from entering near shore/beach areas & co-operate with all agencies. This alert was in effect for a period of 36 hours from 11.30am on Saturday, May 4 to 11.30pm on Sunday, May 5.
Coastal areas and low-lying areas are likely to be affected by swell waves said BMC. As a precaution citizens as well as fisher folks were urged to exercise caution. Ward level staff had been directed the deploy municipal security guards and lifeguards to prevent people from entering into the near shore/beach region. Extra precautions were issued especially due to the increasing number of tourists on the beaches during the ongoing summer vacation.

Fisher folks living along the coast were also urged to keep their boats at a safe distance on the shore during this period to prevent damage from collisions. The BMC in a statement said that the BMC, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, and other agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
