Former India cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has picked GT captain Shubman Gill as the player to watch out for in their upcoming clash against RCB at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Notably, Gill is the second-highest run scorer for GT in the ongoing season with 320 runs to his name from ten innings at an average of 35.55 and a strike rate of 140.96 with two fifties to his name.
Speaking about Shubman Gill’s batting prowess ahead of the game, Chopra stated that the batting-friendly surface in Bengaluru will suit the Gujarat captain. He further said that it’s extremely crucial for his side that the youngster gets going or their entire batting could crumble.
“Since the match is in Bengaluru, it’s a flat pitch, and Shubman Gill has class, I have to go with Shubman Gill as a player to watch out for. Shubman Gill firing is absolutely imperative. If he doesn’t fire, the Titanic will sink. I am expecting him to play the powerplay well,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
If he reaches close to 28-30 in the powerplay, he scores big runs: Chopra
Further speaking ahead, Chopra mentioned the importance of powerplay for Gill and said that if the right-handed batter manages to break free in the first 6 overs, then it will be extremely difficult for RCB to stop him.
“If he reaches close to 28-30 in the powerplay, he scores big runs. If he remains at 15-18 and doesn’t encash the powerplay, he gets slightly stuck later. So I am hoping he makes the powerplay count. If Shubman does that, no one can stop him. Then he bats extremely well,” the 46-year-old added.
Notably, in the previous fixture between the two teams at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Shubman Gill notched up a scintillating 104* (52) with the help of five fours and eight sixes helping Gujarat chase down a massive target of 198. Earlier, Virat Kohli had also scored a hundred in the first innings (101 off 61) to help RCB reach 197/5 after 20 overs.
Meanwhile, Gujarat are sitting in the seventh spot on the points table with four wins from ten matches, having eight points to their name. The upcoming fixture is extremely crucial for both teams to keep their playoff hopes alive, especially for RCB, who’re reeling in the last spot with just six points from ten matches.
