Gerard Butler’s ‘Greenland’ Sequel ‘Migration’ Picked Up by Lionsgate – MASHAHER

Lionsgate will handle U.S. distribution of eagerly awaited “Greenland” sequel “Greenland: Migration,” Variety can confirm.

STX, which has a distribution partnership with Lionsgate, is handling international distribution.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh (“Greenland,” “Angel Has Fallen”) from a screenplay by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune, “Greenland: Migration” sees Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return as John and Allison Garrity. Along with their diabetic son Nathan, the couple were forced to flee in the first film as a comet hurtled towards earth, threatening to destroy the planet. In the sequel the family embark on a perilous journey across what’s left of Europe to find a new home.

Butler and Baccarin are joined by Roman Griffin Davis (“Jojo Rabbit”), Amber Rose Revah (“The Punisher”) and Trond Fausa (“Oppenheimer”) in the film, which is produced by Anton, STX Entertainment, Thunder Road Pictures and Butler’s G-BASE Entertainment.

“In the film, the Garrity family, having found the safety of the Greenland bunker after the comet Clarke decimated the Earth, must risk everything to embark on a harrowing journey across the wasteland of Europe to find a new home,” reads the logline.

Currently in production, the project is set to shoot on location in the U.K. and Iceland.

Despite being released theatrically at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020, “Greenland” dominated the box office across 26 countries, grossing over $52 million internationally. In the U.S. it debuted on PVOD before moving to Max.

“The marriage of large-scale action spectacle with an emotionally resonant, character driven story was very effective, and left audiences wanting to know what happens next,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Gerard, Ric, Basil, Erica and the team have found a visually and emotionally compelling answer to the question and we’re thrilled to be a part of bringing that story to the screen.”

Producer Sébastien Raybaud added: “We’re delighted to have reunited with this amazing cast and crew, and to continue telling the exhilarating story of the Garrity family as they begin their next adventure in this post-apocalyptic world. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for them.”

Noah Fogelson, CEO of STX Entertainment said: “Ric, Gerry, Basil and all our filmmaking partners and collaborators have delivered an incredible epic story as the Garritys continue their quest for survival after an unparalleled global catastrophe. We are thrilled to be starting production and continuing our partnership with the team at Lionsgate. With the care and bespoke treatment they give to every film, we know ’Greenland: Migration’ is in the best possible hands.”

Alan Siegel of G-BASE said: “Working together again with our friends at ThunderRoad, Anton, Cinemachine, and STX is the ultimate gratifying experience. Gerry and I were blown away by the way in which we all bonded together seamlessly to produce a stunning first movie and we’re even more excited about our next adventure with the gang.”

Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud and John Zois, G-BASE’s Butler and Alan Siegel and CineMachine’s Waugh and Brendon Boyea are producing. Executive producers on the project are Robert Simonds, Noah Fogelson and Sam Brown for STX Entertainment and Chris Sparling.

“Greenland: Migration” is fully financed by Anton. Lionsgate and STX bought the film for the U.S. while STX bought the world.

Roman Griffin Davis is repped by Independent Talent Group, WME and Untitled Entertainment. Amber Rose Revah is repped by Accelerate and Luber Rocklin. Trond Fausa is repped by Denton Brierley, Crimson Media and Lev Ginsburg.
