Young American boxer Terrence Williams has put in an early contender for KO of the year after knocking out Argentinian Jonathan Ariel Sosa in terrifying scenes in Florida.
In a rather lopsided match up, the 23-year-old Floridian welterweight moved to 6-0 with five KO’s after knocking out Sosa on his feet on Wednesday night.
In the first fight of a five-fight card put on by Pro Box Promotions, Williams put his name up in lights with the spectacular knock out against Sosa, who’s career record dropped to 7-17 with two draws.
It was Sosa’s 13th loss in his last 14 fights, with his last win coming in 2017.
In that run, he’s been knocked out six times.
While Williams was accused of a rabbit punch to the back of Sosa’s head early, the fight was over just over a minute in when Williams landed a two huge left hands on the Argentinian’s chin.
The second one saw Sosa fall to the canvas with his limbs left stiff as the referee immediately called for medical assistance. Watch below or here.
One of the commentators called it a “bad knockout, yikes”, while the other said Sosa was “out more than cold”.
He was given oxygen in the ring as he was worked on by the doctors.
Sosa was eventually helped to his feet and left the ring, albeit with plenty of assistance.
He was taken to hospital with the commentators receiving word Sosa was alright but would be admitted overnight for observation.
But fans were rocked by the horrific scenes.
The OOC MMA account shared the video, tweeting: “WOW, tonight we just got a scary knockout of the year contender.”
One fan said they were “so scared”, adding: “The darker side of the sport. Hate to see it.”
Other fans said the issue that sent Sosa stiff was his head hitting the canvas, with one calling for “sort of head gear that doesn’t pad front of the head but puts a pad in back”.
While they were truly terrifying scenes after Sosa hit the ground, Williams could have a big future in the sport — if he can show the same skills against stronger opponents.
Williams has only been professional for 14 months but already has six wins on his record with five knockouts all coming in the first round.
Having started his career against two debutants, Williams has somewhat inflated his record against fighters with lopsided records including the then 2-10 Raul Garcia Jr., 7-19-1 Williams Davis, 2-4 Lyle McFarlane and Sosa.
