Pakistani president urges global collaboration on climate action – MASHAHER

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (Xinhua) — Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday that global collaboration should be made to mitigate the effects of climate change by adopting environment-friendly technology and promoting afforestation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the President’s office said in a statement.

In a meeting with the Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and president-designate of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) Mukhtar Babayev, who is on a visit to Pakistan, Zardari said that his country is doing its best to address the challenges posed by climate change.

Zardari, whose country ranks among the top 10 most severely impacted by climate change in the world, said that global warming and climate change are triggering excessive rains and floods in Pakistan, affecting glaciers and causing water scarcity.

He highlighted that Pakistan had planted mangrove forests over hundreds of thousands of hectares that would help protect the environment, besides earning carbon credits for Pakistan, the statement said.

The president conveyed his best wishes for the successful hosting of COP29, saying that Azerbaijan would play its role in securing the interest of developing countries in meeting their financing needs for climate adaptation, the statement added.

Babayev expressed hope to further enhance bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, particularly in the culture and tourism sector.
