Amid growing debate in the film industry about actors’ exorbitant entourage costs and outrageous demands by some stars, Kriti Sanon says it is critical to understand what is necessary for a film and what is luxury, which will ultimately be a wasteful expense that contributes nothing to a project.
Kriti Sanon raises concerns over rising entourage costs in Bollywood
With a dismal first quarter for Bollywood, as well as the huge disasters of Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan and Akshay Kumar-Tiger Shroff-fronted Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the industry has been a buzz with fresh focus on star salaries and, particularly, the entourage costs of celebrities, which burden productions.
During an interview with Film Companion, journalist Anupama Chopra mentioned how she saw the end credits slate of a “big film” this year, headlined by a “massive male star,” where he had three people cooking for him–two cooks and one chef–the cost of which, she said, was covered by the producer.
When asked how the business can sensibly deal with the issue of excessive spending, especially as Kriti Sanon is herself a producer, the actor said, “I don’t know which film you are talking about, but whichever it is, those are too many cooks to begin with!
“But if you are in a film where you need to make a certain kind of body for that particular role, then obviously from the actor a lot of effort goes in achieving that. The expenses then, rightly so, the producer takes care of. So, you need to understand what is needed and what is luxury. The producers have to take a call.”
When questioned if the entourage issue is out of hand nowadays, Kriti stated that hair, make-up, and costume are really essential, and that they occasionally need helpers due to the nature of the task.
“Apart from that I feel, a trainer or a nutrionist, depending on the role…. In my case there have been many situations where my body is of no concern to the producer or the director, so if I am training and taking a trainer, I pay that cost. You have to balance what is needed for the film, what is not. It can’t be unnecessary expense,” she added.
An Indianexpress.com article put light on the dangers of entourage costs, which inflate expenditures and jeopardize a film’s recovery. The cost breakdown for a star’s entourage varies, but on average, a spot boy would charge Rs 25,000 per day, personal security would charge Rs 15,000 per head per day, and a stylist may charge up to Rs 1 lakh.
The overhead cost of a celebrity is Rs 20-22 lakhs each day. If a film is shot for 70 days, the overhead cost for the male and female stars alone would be roughly Rs 15-20 crore, which is in addition to the budget and star fees.
