Richa Chadha’s portrayal of Lajjo in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, on Netflix India has captivated audiences, particularly her performance in a drunken Kathak dance sequence. Despite being a teetotaller, Richa opted for method acting, trying a little gin to authentically embody her character. In an interview with Zoom, she shared her experience, stating, “On the first day, I wasn’t getting it, to do the drunk dancing. So, after 30-40 takes, I thought let me have a quarter and see what happens. I did have some gin. I drank a little bit, but it made things worse.”

Richa’s commitment to her craft led her to discover that pretending to be drunk was more effective than becoming tipsy. She emphasized the technicality of the job, especially when performing intricate dance moves amidst heavy costumes. Despite the challenges, Richa found joy in the process, stating, “It was fun for me to do.”
During an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Richa reflected on the rigorous demands of the role, revealing, “I almost hit a century. You know, it’s not easy. People think it’s easy. Imagine that you’re dancing with about 200 to 300 extras watching you, and you’re unable to perform well.” Despite the pressure, Richa’s perseverance and dedication to her performance shine through, earning her admiration from both fans and colleagues.
Richa’s husband, actor Ali Fazal, also praised her performance, acknowledging her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft. In an Instagram post, he expressed his admiration, writing, “Only a fool would not take Lajjo and fly away !! ( Lajjo check) You are simply the best and I feel so lucky I get to share my notes with you in person.” Richa, in turn, expressed gratitude, affirming her appreciation for the support and recognition of her work.
