Richmond’s injury crisis somehow keeps getting worse, with an almost unthinkable reality on the cards.
Plus Swans veteran’s return “yet to be decided”, Geelong’s tricky forward line call and concerns for Carlton and Collingwood.

AFL ROUND 10 TEAM TIPS AND FIXTURE (all times AEST)
GOLD COAST SUNS v GEELONG
Thursday May 16, 7:30pm at TIO Stadium
Suns’ Round 9 side
B: S.Collins, C.Ballard, B.Uwland
HB: A.Sexton, S.Flanders, M.Andrew
C: M.Rowell, T.Miller, S.Clohesy
HF: J.Rogers, B.Long, L.Johnston
F: J.Walter, B.King, J.Lukosius
FOLL: J.Witts – C, N.Anderson, A.Davies
I/C: J.Jeffrey, B.Ainsworth, T.Berry, N.Holman, B.Humphrey
EMG: B.Fiorini, S.Day, D.Swallow
Team Tips: The Suns pulverised the Kangaroos last Saturday night, but it’s hard to know if that says more about them or the opposition. Nick Holman has had a few quiet weeks for the Suns, but might be more important to their forward structure than what meets the eye. Inclusions Lloyd Johnston and Joel Jeffrey were impressive, and deserve to play the Cats on Thursday night. Young gun Will Graham responded strongly to his dropping, registering 24 disposals, seven tackles, six inside 50’s and a goal for the VFL side, while Jy Farrar continued his reincarnation as a forward, kicking 2.2 from his 10 disposals. Connor Budarick had the ball 34 times in a solid display, but may not have had the impact with ball in hand Damien Hardwick would be looking for in a potential inclusion.
Cats’ Round 9 side
B: J.Henry, S.De Koning, J.Kolodjashnij
HB: Z.Guthrie, T.Stewart – C, M.Holmes
C: M.O’Connor, B.Parfitt, M.Blicavs
HF: O.Dempsey, J.Cameron, G.Miers
F: T.Stengle, T.Hawkins, O.Henry
FOLL: R.Stanley, C.Guthrie, M.Duncan
I/C: B.Close, O.Mullin, T.Atkins, J.Clark, G.Rohan
EMG: Z.Tuohy, J.Bowes, S.Neale
Team Tips: The big news for Geelong out of their one goal loss to Port Adelaide is the delayed concussion of Jeremy Cameron, who will miss the trip up to Darwin. Additionally, Chris Scott has already flagged that fellow forward Tom Hawkins will be managed given the six-day break. Could he backflip on that given Cameron’s absence? Ruck Toby Conway deserves his place back in the side, and could very well come in for one of the forward duo – as could Shannon Neale, who has been emergency most weeks in 2024. Tanner Bruhn is expected to make his return from a shoulder injury, and would be a welcome addition given the two big outs. The form of Jhye Clark has come in ebbs and flows this season, with the 19-year-old perhaps benefiting from a short stint in the reserves. The Cats’ VFL side had a bye over the weekend, but emergencies Zach Tuohy and Jack Bowes will naturally be in the selection frame to travel to Darwin also.

SYDNEY SWANS v CARLTON
Friday May 17, 7:40pm at the SCG
Swans’ Round 9 side
B: A.Francis, D.Rampe – C, L.Melican
HB: H.Cunningham, O.Florent, N.Blakey
C: E.Gulden, Ch.Warner, J.Lloyd
HF: J.Jordon, L.McDonald, T.Adams
F: T.Papley, J.Amartey, W.Hayward
FOLL: B.Grundy, I.Heeney, J.Rowbottom
I/C: M.Roberts, J.McInerney, H.McLean, S.Wicks, R.Fox
EMG: C.Mitchell, P.Ladhams, B.Campbell
Team Tips: There were very little passengers for the Swans last week in Perth, but intrigue continues to remain over the non-selection of veteran Luke Parker. Swans coach John Longmire told SEN Breakfast on Tuesday morning it is “yet to be decided” whether Parker returns for their Friday night blockbuster against the Blues this week. Longmire said there were “no secrets” about Parker’s non-selection and that they were happy with the current midfield mix. Sam Wicks was quiet again, and may find himself out of the side with consistent performances in the reserves from the likes of Parker. All things going well, Tom McCartin could return from his mandatory stint on the sidelines with concussion – likely in place of sub Robbie Fox. Emergency Braeden Campbell had a large game against the Kangaroos in the reserves with 27 disposals, nine tackles and seven inside 50’s, while Caiden Cleary continued his good form with another 29 disposals and 10 marks; perhaps pushing for a debut.
Blues’ Round 9 side
B: B.Kemp, J.Weitering, L.Cowan
HB: A.Cincotta, M.McGovern, N.Newman
C: O.Hollands, P.Cripps – C, B.Acres
HF: J.Martin, H.McKay, E.Hollands
F: M.Owies, C.Curnow, T.De Koning
FOLL: M.Pittonet, S.Walsh, M.Kennedy
I/C: J.Boyd, A.Cerra, M.Cottrell, G.Hewett, C.Durdin
EMG: D.Cuningham, Le.Young, O.Fantasia
Team Tips: The matches don’t get any easier for the Blues, now travelling to Sydney to play the top-of-the-ladder Swans. Doubt surrounds the fitness of Marc Pittonet, who had surgery on an injured finger and is now racing the clock to be fit for Friday night. Adam Cerra however will certainly be on the sidelines, after succumbing to another hamstring injury against Melbourne. Lachie Cowan and Corey Durdin were quiet against the Demons, but the injuries at Ikon Park may allow them another chance to lock their spots away in the best 23. Zac Williams didn’t play last weekend due to injury, but is absolutely no certainty to regain his position in the side. Jesse Motlop is a chance to return from his hamstring injury, but is far more likely to begin his comeback via the VFL. Jaxon Binns went one better than his reserves match last week, amassing a whopping 43 disposals, 11 marks and seven inside 50’s against Casey last Friday night – undoubtedly their reserves’ best performer. Jack Carroll was also solid, kicking a goal and collecting 23 disposals.

COLLINGWOOD v KUWARNA (ADELAIDE CROWS)
Saturday May 18, 1:45pm at the MCG
Magpies’ Round 9 side
B: B.Maynard, D.Moore – C, J.Howe
HB: I.Quaynor, J.Noble, O.Markov
C: S.Sidebottom, S.Pendlebury, J.Daicos
HF: H.Harrison, B.Frampton, R.McInnes
F: P.Lipinski, B.Hill, D.Cameron
FOLL: M.Cox, J.Crisp, N.Daicos
I/C: F.Macrae, J.Bytel, J.Richards, L.Sullivan, W.Hoskin-Elliott
EMG: E. Allan, A. Begg, C.Dean
Team Tips: Plenty of intrigue surrounds the Magpies’ selection this weekend, with plenty of players to become available and unavailable. Jeremy Howe was the first of the black and white to go down injured on Sunday, and will miss 2-3 weeks with a groin issue. His sub replacement Jack Bytel was unfortunately concussed in his first game at the club, while Harvey Harrison will be a test after he exited the game at quarter time with an ankle injury. Jamie Elliott will miss at least another 2-3 weeks due to a vascular (blood circulation) issue that has him on a modified training program. Jordan de Goey and Tom Mitchell will be tests while Beau McCreery needs to build his running loads and won’t be available for another week, at least. Brody Mihocek is aiming to return in Round 11 as well. Premiership player Oleg Markov was the quietest of those to play out the game against West Coast, but that can probably be put down to his side’s dominance. Defender Charlie Dean looks ready for another crack at AFL after his 27 disposals and 14 marks in the VFL on the weekend, while Ash Johnson kicked three goals in a successful move back to the forward line.
Crows’ Round 9 side
B: D.Curtin, J.Butts, C.Jones
HB: J.Worrell, M.Keane, M.Michalanney
C: M.Hinge, J.Soligo, J.Dawson – C
HF: L.Sholl, T.Walker, J.Rachele
F: E.Himmelberg, D.Fogarty, I.Rankine
FOLL: R.O’Brien, R.Laird, B.Keays
I/C: M.Crouch, L.Nankervis, B.Smith, B.Cook, N.McHenry
EMG: C. Burgess, S. Berry, L. Murphy
Team Tips: The only forced change for the Crows after their draw against Brisbane will be Josh Worrell, who unfortunately will miss 8-12 weeks after needing surgery on a fractured left forearm. If being tactically subbed in back-to-back games is anything to go by, it looks like the highly-touted Dan Curtin is on the fringe of Matthew Nicks’ side. James Borlase is the logical replacement for Worrell, and will look to finally hold down his place in the top side. Lachie Murphy was busy for the Crows’ reserves last Friday night against Norwood, kicking 1.2 from his 22 disposals as he patiently waits for a recall. Harry Schoenberg has been playing well since his return from injury, and may also be considered for AFL honours soon enough. Ruck Kieran Strachan continues his impressive reserves season, and accumulated 22 disposals, eight marks and 32 hitouts against the Redlegs. Sam Berry and Billy Dowling stayed true to their high-pressure persona, racking up 12 and 10 tackles respectively in the same game. Chris Burgess didn’t play at all on the weekend, as he was on call for any late outs in the senior side.
Selfish Lions cost themselves a win? | 02:36
GWS GIANTS v WESTERN BULLDOGS
Saturday May 18, 4:35pm at ENGIE Stadium
Giants’ Round 9 side
B: C.Idun, S.Taylor, H.Perryman
HB: L.Whitfield, J.Buckley, L.Ash
C: N.Haynes, J.Kelly, F.Callaghan
HF: B.Daniels, A.Cadman, T.Bedford
F: T.Greene – C, J.Hogan, H.Thomas
FOLL: K.Briggs, C.Ward, S.Coniglio
I/C: D.Jones, T.Green, H.Himmelberg, J.Riccardi, C.Stone
EMG: J.Peatling, J.Wehr, M.Gruzewski
Team Tips: The Giants’ surprise loss to Essendon may have shown some small flaws in their game plan, potentially pointing Adam Kingsley towards an unforced change or two. Conor Stone was subbed out in the last quarter, but looked good in his return – despite a low disposal count. Young forward and sub Harvey Thomas has been teetering on the edge of the team for a few weeks now, and may make way for James Peatling, who was surprisingly dropped last week. Midfielder Xavier O’Halloran responded to his dropping a fortnight ago, accruing 31 disposals, 11 clearances, 11 tackles, 10 inside 50’s and a goal in the reserves. Harry Rowston continues his strong VFL form, acquiring another 23 disposals, 10 tackles and a goal – and is certainly an option as a half-forward should Kingsley swing the axe on one of Stone or Thomas.
Bulldogs’ Round 9 side
B: L.Bramble, L.Jones, B.Dale
HB: T.Duryea, A.Keath, J.Johannisen
C: B.Williams, A.Treloar, J.Freijah
HF: L.Vandermeer, A.Naughton, R.Garcia
F: J.Harmes, J.Ugle-Hagan, R.West
FOLL: T.English, M.Bontempelli – C, E.Richards
I/C: L.Cleary, S.Darcy, H.Gallagher, J.Macrae, J.O’Donnell
EMG: R.Lobb, C.Daniel, A.Jones
Team Tips: The Bulldogs were flawless against the Tigers last Saturday night, but that’s not to say it won’t be a tough week at the selection table for Luke Beveridge and co. Joel Freijah played well on debut, but him and Luke Cleary may be vulnerable given they are the last players into the side. The availability of Laitham Vandermeer is still unclear, with the Dog subbed off in the second quarter with a bad shin. Should he be unavailable, there are a plethora of players from the VFL who could fill his void. Rory Lobb kicked four goals in the reserves, with an impressive 21 disposals and 28 hitouts to go with them. Dropped utility Buku Khamis also kicked a bag of four, while Charlie Clarke – who was also omitted – kicked 3.2 from 17 disposals. Ryley Sanders kicked 42 disposals, one goal and had 12 clearances in a damning reminder to Beveridge he’s a star of the future. The regularly overlooked Caleb Daniel had 26 disposals, 14 tackles and 10 clearances, and might be wondering what more he can do to earn a recall.

EURO-YROKE (ST KILDA) v WALYALUP (FREMANTLE)
Saturday May 18, 7:30pm at Marvel Stadium
Saints’ Round 9 side
B: J.Battle, D.Howard, C.Wilkie
HB: R.Bonner, J.Sinclair, N.Wanganeen-Milera
C: A.Hastie, L.Stocker, M.Wood
HF: D.Wilson, B.Hill, L.Henry
F: M.Owens, M.King, J.Hayes
FOLL: R.Marshall, J.Steele – C, M.Windhager
I/C: S.Ross, T.Membrey, J.Webster, B.Paton, H.Garcia
EMG: R.Byrnes, M.Phillipou, T.Campbell
Team Tips: The Saints need a spark, so is one available at selection? Hunter Clark remained in the VFL after an injury concern and showed reasonable signs with 17 disposals and six tackles, while Anthony Caminiti was a clear standout in the narrow loss to Box Hill. Mattaes Phillipou, after being surprisingly dropped – though perhaps not too surprising given his indifferent form – had 20 disposals and eight tackles, while Paddy Dow was similarly solid. They’re still a couple of weeks away from regaining Dan Butler (hamstring) or Brad Crouch (knee).
Dockers’ Round 9 side
B: B.Walker, A.Pearce – C, J.Draper
HB: H.Chapman, L.Ryan, J.Clark
C: J.Sharp, A.Brayshaw, H.Young
HF: J.O’Meara, J.Treacy, M.Frederick
F: S.Switkowski, J.Amiss, T.Emmett
FOLL: L.Jackson, C.Serong, N.Fyfe
I/C: M.Walters, B.Banfield, M.Johnson, J.Aish, P.Voss
EMG: C.Wagner, L.Reidy, H. Davies
Team Tips: Hard to be too critical of the Dockers’ loss to Sydney given the circumstances, but they played better than the scoreline suggested anyway – they just have to kick straighter – so you wouldn’t expect too many unforced changes. They should make at least one big switch with Sean Darcy not risked for the five-day break heading into last Friday night, and just needing to be cleared of a calf issue. Young key forward Patrick Voss would be the logical out. Having often been the travelling emergency Neil Erasmus impressed in the WAFL, gathering 38 disposals in Peel Thunder’s win over Swan Districts, but it’s hard to see him pushing past the likes of Matthew Johnson.
Nothing could split Lions and Crows | 03:25
BRISBANE LIONS v RICHMOND
Saturday May 18, 7:30pm at the Gabba
Lions’ Round 9 side
B: D.Zorko, J.Payne, R.Lester
HB: D.Wilmot, H.Andrews, C.McKenna
C: J.Fletcher, C.Rayner, J.Berry
HF: C.Cameron, E.Hipwood, H.McCluggage
F: K.Lohmann, J.Daniher, B.Reville
FOLL: O.McInerney, J.Dunkley, L.Neale – C
I/C: C.Ah Chee, L.Morris, J.Prior, H.Sharp, S.Brain
Team Tips: In stark contrast to the Pineapple Grapple, the Lions didn’t have any injury issues to worry about from the Round 8 draw. Shadeau Brain had some good moments after coming on as the sub at three-quarter-time but will obviously be on the borderline to hold his spot; it’s just a matter of who’s available to get this side back up towards full strength. Noah Answerth will hopefully clear the concussion protocols and could replace Jaxon Prior, while Dev Robertson (shoulder) and Zac Bailey (ankle) are likely a week or two further away. The Lions had the week off at VFL level coming off an 86-point derby loss; Prior and fringe veteran mid Jarryd Lyons were the best in that one anyway.
Tigers’ Round 9 side
B: B.Miller, N.Broad, T.Young
HB: N.Vlastuin, T.Brown, D.Rioli
C: H.Ralphsmith, M.Pickett, S.Banks
HF: R.Mansell, S.Bolton, M.Rioli
F: N.Balta, D.Martin, M.Lefau
FOLL: T.Nankervis – C, D.Prestia, T.Dow
I/C: J.Short, J.Graham, N.Cumberland, S.Campbell, T.Sonsie
EMG: K.McIntosh, S.Ryan, S.Green
Team Tips: Amid all the criticism around the terrible Bulldogs loss – and it was terrible – it’s worth noting the Tigers may only have 26 fit players for this weekend. And they have to name 26 for the squad. Jack Graham (hamstring), Sam Banks (concussion) and Maurice Rioli jnr (syndesmosis) will miss, while Seth Campbell (knee) and Tyler Sonsie (wrist) are concerns, plus James Trezise (concussion) and Jacob Koschitzke (rolled ankle) copped blows in the VFL. It’s hoped Liam Baker (corked leg) and Dylan Grimes (managed) will return for Round 9 – if they’re cleared, the Tigers will at least have a couple of choices to make with 28 fit players – while Kane McAuliffe was excellent in the VFL. Jacob Hopper (hamstring) looks a week away.

ESSENDON v NORTH MELBOURNE
Sunday May 19, 1:10pm at Marvel Stadium
Bombers’ Round 9 side
B: D.Heppell, B.McKay, J.Laverde
HB: N.Martin, M.Redman, A.McGrath
C: M.Guelfi, D.Parish, J.Kelly
HF: S.Durham, K.Langford, J.Gresham
F: H.Jones, P.Wright, A.Perkins
FOLL: T.Goldstein, J.Caldwell, Z.Merrett – C
I/C: B.Hobbs, N.Cox, N.Hind, J.Stringer, A.Davey Jnr
EMG: E.Tsatas, D.Shiel, S.Weideman
Team Tips: Hard to make too many changes after the brilliant win over GWS and, to be brutally honest, you don’t need to rush guys back to face the Kangaroos either. Especially stars like Jordan Ridley, who may need another week to recover from his quad concern, while Sam Draper’s mid-week setback has him a ways away. Zach Reid had 26 disposals and 10 marks in his VFL return while Jye Menzie hit the scoreboard once. VFL coach Blake Caracella praised Elijah Tsatas’ inside work but said he needs to balance it with his outside play, while Dylan Shiel is getting back up to his prior level. Will Setterfield (knee) looks 1-2 weeks away.
Kangaroos’ Round 9 side
B: C.Comben, A.Corr, L.McDonald – C
HB: C.McKercher, H.Sheezel, J.Archer
C: D.Tucker, L.Davies-Uniacke, B.Scott
HF: J.Stephenson, T.Powell, Z.Fisher
F: P.Curtis, N.Larkey, C.Zurhaar
FOLL: T.Xerri, G.Wardlaw, W.Phillips
I/C: C.Lazzaro, H.Greenwood, R.Hardeman, L.Shiels, B.Drury
EMG: Z.Duursma, T.Pink, E.Ford
Team Tips: At least their injury list isn’t the problem (though there’s obviously a couple of guys on there they’d like to be fit). They should regain Jy Simpkin for the Bombers clash, after he missed the Darwin trip with soreness, while you’d think they’ll give Charlie Lazzaro (the sub) and Will Phillips (who remains on the fringe of the side) an extended run at AFL gametime. Jackson Archer, having just recovered from a sprained ankle suffered in Round 8, came out of Round 9 with a foot complaint. Zane Duursma kicked four goals in a tight VFL loss to push his chances of an immediate AFL return.
‘Hard to watch’ Roos losing fans? | 00:41
YARTAPUULTI (PORT ADELAIDE) v HAWTHORN
Sunday May 19, 3:20pm at Adelaide Oval
Power’s Round 9 side
B: K.Farrell, B.Zerk-Thatcher, A.Aliir
HB: M.Bergman, E.Ratugolea, D.Houston
C: J.Sinn, O.Wines, W.Drew
HF: D.Byrne-Jones, T.Marshall, M.Georgiades
F: T.Boak, C.Dixon, W.Rioli
FOLL: D.Visentini, J.Horne-Francis, Z.Butters – C
I/C: J.Mead, J.McEntee, R.Burton, F.Evans, J.Finlayson
EMG: D.Williams, T.Clurey, W.Lorenz
Team Tips: Fresh off a season-boosting win down in Geelong, Port Adelaide will be reluctant to change their ways too much – and rightly so. Jordon Sweet will be the one likely unforced change to come into the side, with the expectation he’ll have recovered from a COVID bout come Sunday. That will mean the unlucky omission of ruck Dante Visentini, who performed honourably in Sweet’s absence. Both Connor Rozee and Lachie Jones are chances to return from low-grade hamstring strains, however the club may take a conservative approach on their returns with a match against Hawthorn this weekend. Jase Burgoyne was given a week to manage a slight groin/adductor injury, and may come back in for Josh Sinn down back. Tom Clurey was one of Port’s best on in the reserves’ heavy loss against North Adelaide, racking up 27 disposals and 10 marks. Ollie Lord kicked two of the side’s five goals, but will struggle to crack into an ultra-effective forward line last Friday night.
Hawks’ Round 9 side
B: J.Weddle, S.Frost, M.D’Ambrosio
HB: J.Scrimshaw, W.Day, C.Mackenzie
C: J.Impey, D.Moore – C, K.Amon
HF: C.Nash, J.Gunston, B.Hardwick
F: J.Ginnivan, L.Breust, N.Watson
FOLL: L.Meek, J.Newcombe, C.Macdonald
I/C: S.Mitchell, C.Dear, J.Worpel, J.Serong, F.Maginness
EMG: E.Phillips, J.Ward, H.Morrison
Team Tips: A hard-fought win down in Launceston over St Kilda gave the Hawks their third win of 2024, as well as a new-found level of confidence. Mabior Chol and Mitch Lewis could possibly return, but question marks currently remain over their respective wrist and knee injuries. Young Hawk Henry Hustwaite could return from concussion, but given the side’s form last Saturday, may be forced to play a week or two in the VFL. Calsher Dear was quiet down in Tasmania, but deserves another crack after his stunning debut. Josh Ward responded well to his dropping accumulating 29 disposals, seven clearances and six inside 50’s, while Changkuoth Jiath got through the match unscathed with 22 disposals and eight marks.

WAALITJ MARAWAR (WEST COAST EAGLES) v NARRM (MELBOURNE)
Sunday May 19, 6:20pm at Optus Stadium
Eagles’ Round 9 side
B: J.Rotham, T.Barrass, L.Duggan – C
HB: B.Hough, J.McGovern, T.Cole
C: D.Sheed, T.Kelly, L.Edwards
HF: J.Petruccelle, L.Ryan, J.Cripps
F: T.Dewar, J.Darling, J.Williams
FOLL: B.Williams, R.Ginbey, H.Reid
I/C: J.Hunt, C.Chesser, A.Witherden, H.Johnston, R.Maric
Team Tips: Being without the in-form Elliot Yeo (groin) and Jake Waterman (concussion) didn’t explain the entire margin against Collingwood, but it sure didn’t help, and it’s hoped the pair will recover in time for Sunday’s clash. Adam Simpson declared the pair a chance on Monday while Jeremy McGovern, who was hospitalised due to internal injuries, flew back with the team and is also hopefully fine to play. Jack Petruccelle came out of the game with a syndesmosis concern with Simpson suggesting on Sunday “we thought we could get him back but we didn’t want to risk it”. Debutant Tyrell Dewar will hold his spot with Tyler Brockman still unavailable.
Demons’ Round 9 side
B: B.Howes, S.May, T.Rivers
HB: J.McVee, J.Lever, T.McDonald
C: J.Billings, C.Oliver, C.Windsor
HF: E.Langdon, H.Petty, K.Pickett
F: J.van Rooyen, B.Fritsch, D.Turner
FOLL: M.Gawn – C, J.Viney, C.Petracca
I/C: J.Bowey, A.Neal-Bullen, T.Sparrow, K.Chandler, T.Woewodin
EMG: B.Laurie, M.Hore, B.Brown
Team Tips: It’s a relatively clean bill of health for the Demons now, with Christian Salem to return from a hamstring injury on Sunday if he’s passed fit, plus Charlie Spargo (Achilles) a week or two away. That would leave just Jake Melksham (knee, 4-6 weeks) on the sidelines in a massive boost for Simon Goodwin’s side as other premiership rivals battle numerous absences. He has options for change if he feels the need, with Ben Brown kicking a wasteful yet promising 2.6 from six marks in the VFL, while fringe tall Adam Tomlinson and forgotten winger Lachie Hunter each had 24 disposals. Taj Woewodin played limited VFL game time after being the sub for Thursday night’s narrow loss, a role he has often filled this year.
