PUTRAJAYA: An explanation will be sought from Meta on why posts about certain Malaysian media reports on the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s meeting with Hamas political leaders were removed from its social media platforms.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said his office was informed about the matter and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had written a letter to Meta for an explanation.
“I condemn the move to take down the posts, particularly reports on the Prime Minister’s official work and activities.
“Meta has violated media freedom. I will also be writing to them to seek an explanation,” he said on Wednesday (May 15).
On whether the country is prepared to face economic backlash over its continued relations with Hamas, Fahmi, who is also government spokesman, pointed out that Malaysia’s relations are with the political wing of Hamas.
“All political parties in the country have relations with the political wing of Hamas, based on the struggle to establish Palestine as a nation. The government’s stand is clear on this.
“We do not have relations with Hamas’ military wing,” he said.
While in Doha, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a meeting with Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh.
The meeting also attracted controversy as foreign reports had alleged there were Malaysian links involved in channelling funds to Hamas.
