Actor Prateik Babbar is set for an emotional journey to the Cannes Film Festival 2024. His late mother, the legendary actress Smita Patil, will be honored with a screening of her 1976 film Manthan in the prestigious Cannes Classics segment.

Speaking to Hindustan Times before his departure, Prateik expressed his profound emotions. “My mother is going to be celebrated. It is a big moment for me and my family. For me specifically it is extremely symbolic. I am a very proud son. This moment reminds me of how amazing a woman she us and how I am lucky to be her son,” he said.
Manthan holds a special place in Indian cinema history. It was a landmark crowd-funded project, with five lakh dairy farmers contributing Rs 2 each to make the film a reality. “I always knew about it,” Babbar shared. “My grandmother and aunt used to tell me the story of the film’s making. My grandfather was also a farmer, so I was always told to feel proud of my lineage.”
Babbar also revealed, “I revisit my mom’s films very frequently. It’s like watching FRIENDS for me – you know what’s going to happen next, but you keep watching.” When asked if such dedication to filmmaking exists in the current generation, Babbar offered a nuanced perspective. “It’s difficult now. I won’t say it’s impossible. We need to have that kind of reach and support, and most importantly, the story.”
Speaking of the film, released in 1976, Manthan (Hindi for “The Churning”) is a film by director Shyam Benegal that explores the challenges and triumphs of social change in rural India. Set against the backdrop of a village struggling with poverty and exploitation, the film chronicles the arrival of Dr. Rao (Girish Karnad), an idealistic veterinarian, who attempts to establish a milk cooperative movement.
