The expansive “Rick and Morty” multiverse just got a little bit bigger. The hit Adult Swim animated series just debuted the first-ever footage from the hotly anticipated anime spinoff series simply titled, “Rick and Morty: The Anime.”
According to the teaser, the new anime-inspired show will debut with 10 episodes on Adult Swim and HBO Max “sometime this year.”
Takashi Sano is the spinoff director and previously helmed the anime shorts “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil).”
“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” Sano said in an earlier press release. “It’s such a life-affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”
The early preview of “Rick and Morty: The Anime” shows Morty on a new planet with a new alien species, who are all celebrating the fact that he saved their planet. Morty toys and holograms are prominently displayed all over their world. A sign with the words “Happy Independence Day” and a picture of Morty’s face is strung across a building while the alien species radio explains that Morty is about to be honored. If the anime is anything like the original material, this will all eventually end in tears for someone at some point.
More previews of the new series dropped earlier in the month of May including this look at anime Summer and anime Rick. It also included a sneak peek at the new voice actors working with the characters.
Past episodes have garnered up to 10 million views on Youtube. Here’s the full video of “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider.”
