NEW DELHI: The discussion around the exclusions of Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh from India’s T20 World Cup squad is not going to take a backseat with former India player Robin Uthappa expressing his views on the matter.
Opener Gill and star batter Rinku did not find a spot in the main squad but barely managed to make the reserve list but Uthappa said youngsters should have been in the squad in place of senior players.”I’m gonna catch a lot of flak for this, but I’ll take it. I think they should’ve moved on after the previous World Cup itself,” Uthappa said while speaking on JioCinema.
“I think the youngsters should’ve played in this World Cup. The senior players have had their go, and these guys are showing true potential. The fact that they’ve been performing in IPL consistently… a lot of these guys who are performing now, the likes of Shubman Gill should be there,” Uthappa added.
Earlier, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar also described the omission of Rinku as the “toughest” call, saying the in-from swashbuckler has “done nothing wrong” and it all came down to combinations.
“It (not picking Rinku) is probably the toughest thing we have had to discuss. He has done nothing wrong, not even Shubman Gill for that matter. It is not his fault that he missed out. It’s about combinations,” Agarkar said.
Rinku has scored 356 runs at an average of 89 and strike rate of 176.24 in 15 T20Is for India while Gill made 335 runs in 14 games.
