At a recent Mother’s Day event with her granddaughter Sara Ali Khan, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore delighted the audience with a funny and heartwarming story about her late husband, cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, also known as Tiger Pataudi. Reflecting on their early days of marriage, Sharmila recounted how she humorously dodged kitchen duties, leading Tiger to discover his culinary talents.
Sharmila Tagore’s clever kitchen strategy turned Tiger Pataudi into a Master Chef: “That was so clever of me”
Sharmila shared, in an interview with Indian Express, “My husband told me ‘You should go to the kitchen at least three times a day.’ I said ‘Tiger, that is a very bad idea. It would be very, very counterproductive if I went to the kitchen. I will start asking ‘Yeh nahi hai, woh kahan hai. Somebody would resign. It’s much better if I don’t go to the kitchen.’” This witty retort from Sharmila led to a surprising outcome: Tiger Pataudi took up cooking himself and turned out to be quite good at it.
Reflecting on how this arrangement worked out, Sharmila continued, “At the end, he gave up and started cooking himself. That was so clever of me. He started making such wonderful things. It made him so confident. He started calling people for recipes. He would make a new dish, watch YouTube, and ask friends for recipes. Once I was in London, someone called and said, ‘He gave us this fantastic meal.’ He was doing very well without me going to the kitchen.” Her anecdote drew laughter and admiration, showcasing the playful and supportive dynamics of their relationship.
Sharmila and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s relationship, which culminated in marriage in 1968, was the talk of the town, especially given their interfaith backgrounds. Sharmila also discussed the initial challenges they faced due to their different cultural and religious backgrounds. “In my family, everybody, my uncle, my cousins, they were all married to Bengalis and in Tiger’s family, they were all married to their own, from their community. So, Tiger and I were the only people, and we just announced to our respective families that we were getting married. Then I was working, and he was playing cricket, so we didn’t know what the background angsts were,” she revealed.
Despite the initial scepticism and challenges, the couple built a strong and loving marriage, eventually welcoming three children: Saif Ali Khan, Saba Ali Khan, and Soha Ali Khan. Sharmila’s story not only highlights their unique and humorous domestic arrangements but also underscores the enduring bond and mutual respect that defined their relationship.
