ISKANDAR PUTERI: Putrajaya should consider reimplementing back the Goods and Service Tax (GST), says Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
During the state assembly meeting, Onn Hafiz said the high cost of living issue was raised by assemblymen.
“It cannot be denied that the people have voiced concerns about the proposed rationalisation of subsidies, especially involving the increase in petrol and diesel prices.
“The state government is also concerned about the domino effect and increase in inflation when this subsidy rationalisation is enforced,” he said.
Onn Hafiz said this in his winding-up speech during the state assembly meeting held at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar here on Sunday (May 19).
He, however, added that the state government has confidence in the assurance given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that the rationalisation implementation would not burden the people.
“But before the decision is made, the state government hopes that the federal government can consider the reimplementation of GST as an additional source of income to the federal government in helping the people.
“This is also in line with the views given by economic experts who stated that GST is the best taxation system for a country,” he added.
