CJ 4DPlex Names Joon Beom Sim as CEO – MASHAHER

Korean cinema technology company CJ 4DPLex has appointed longstanding CJ Entertainment & Media exec Joon Beom Sim as its new CEO, set to lead the Seoul-based producer of premium large format theater technology, such as panoramic ScreenX auditoriums and the moving, multi-sensory experience known as 4DX.

Sim most recently served as head of CJ ENM’s music content division, where his responsibilities included management of the music business, live events and CJ’s broadcast network Mnet and fandom platform Mnet Plus. He replaces Jong Ryul Kim, who had served as CEO of the cinema technology company for nearly six years.

“In assuming the role of CEO at CJ 4DPLex, I am thrilled to lead the company into its next chapter of growth and global prominence,” Sim wrote in a statement. “With a rich background in the entertainment landscape under the CJ Group conglomerate, particularly at CJ ENM and CJ CGV, I am deeply honored to spearhead cinema innovation with our premium film formats, 4DX and ScreenX. Together, we will continue to revolutionize the industry with our groundbreaking cinema technologies ensuring that audiences worldwide are captivated and entertained like never before.”

“Joon Beom Sim’s appointment as CEO of CJ 4DPlex marks an exciting milestone for our company,” said Don Savant, president and CEO of CJ 4DPlex America. “We are honored to welcome him to the team, especially given his extensive and impressive experience with the CJ Group. With his proven track record of success at CJ ENM and CJ CGV, Sim’s leadership will undoubtedly propel CJ 4DPlex to new heights.”

Sim has been with CJ Group for nearly two decades, with his first major executive role being CFO for the Vietnam branch of CJ CGV, the entertainment and tech corporation’s multiplex chain. He was named CEO of CJ CGV Vietnam in 2017, beginning a three-year tenure in which he managed operations and development, as well as film investment and distribution. He then served as head of domestic business of CJ CGV before shifting into his most recent role in the parent company’s music content division.

CJ 4DPlex has expanded its global footprint dramatically over the past decade. The company’s 4DX auditoriums, which feature effects such as moving seats, lighting and weather simulations that are synchronized to onscreen action, now total more than 745 across 70 countries. Meanwhile, its ScreenX auditoriums, which expands select sequences of films into a 270-degree field-of-view, feature nearly 400 locations in 40 countries.
