Netflix’s adaptation of Jo Nesbø Nordic crime series has found its Detective Harry Hole in “The Last Kingdom” star Tobias Santelmann.
Santelmann, who has also appeared in “Exit” and “The Arctic Convoy,” will be joined in the show by Joel Kinnaman (“The Suicide Squad”) who will play Tom Waaler and Pia Tjelta (“Made in Oslo”) as Rakel Fauke.
“I am incredibly grateful for the trust I have been shown in getting to play Harry Hole,” Santelmann said. “I am very much aware of the huge global fan base and the millions of readers who love the character. For me, it is about creating a Harry that people can both recognize and be surprised by. I can’t wait for the shoot to start. It will be a true pleasure to work with everyone.”
The cast was unveiled during a live event at Norway’s Schrøder restaurant, which serves as Harry’s second home in the novel series. Each actor arrived in the car their character drives in the series.
“Underneath the surface, this series is a nuanced character drama about two police officers – and supposed colleagues – operating on opposite sides of the law,” reads the logline. “Throughout the first season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long time adversary and corrupt detective Tom Waaler. Harry is a brilliant but tormented homicide detective who struggles with his demons. As the two navigate the blurred ethical lines of the criminal justice system, Harry must do all he can to catch a serial killer and bring Waaler to justice before it is too late.”
Produced by Working Title (“Notting Hill”), the series will shoot on location in Oslo, with production kicking off this month. Nesbø is adapting his own screenplay, while Øystein Karlsen directs.
The series’ official title will be “Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole” and it is set to drop on the streamer in 2026.
Tor Arne Øvrebø is producing while executive producers are Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Katy Rozelle, Rene Ezra, Øystein Karlsen, Jo Nesbø and Niclas Salomonsson.
Hole was previously played by Michael Fassbender in a 2017 feature film adaptation of Nesbø’s “The Snowman,” which is one of the novels in his best-selling series, directed by Tomas Alfredson.
