If you’re looking to refamiliarize yourself with the Australian Wasteland in George Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise before seeing “Furiosa” this weekend, you’re in luck: all four previous films in the beloved “Mad Max” series are available to stream online.
The “Mad Max” franchise consists of: “Mad Max: (1979), “Mad Max 2” (1981), “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (2024), hitting theaters May 24.
The entire series has been well received by critics since its first film’s release in 1979, with “Mad Max 2” and “Fury Road” widely ranked among the best action films ever made. In 2016, “Fury Road” became the first film of the “Mad Max” franchise to receive Academy Award recognition, winning six of its ten nominations.
Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the title role from Charlize Theron in the prequel, which follows Furiosa as she’s kidnapped from her home as a young child by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Horde and seeks vengeance and a reunion with her family and her homeland.
In his review of the film, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praises its Miller’s “dazzling sequences” and “awesome action moments” but writes that the “overstuffed epic is no ‘Fury Road’.”
“Though it contains a handful of awesome action moments,” he writes, “the action doesn’t dominate the way it did in previous ‘Mad Max’ films. [Miller] seems more invested this time in his world-building than he is in his road-warrior-ing.”
So, whether you’re in need of a refresher on the “Mad Max” universe in order to fully appreciate the forthcoming prequel, or are simply looking for a good binge this weekend, stream all four “Mad Max” films on Max below:
