B.C. Public Safety Minister addresses court decision on Surrey police transition

A B.C. Supreme Court judge’s ruling on whether B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth can order the city of Surrey to transition from RCMP to a local police force is expected on Thursday.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge is expected to rule Thursday on whether the provincial public safety minister has the right to order the City of Surrey to transition from the RCMP to a municipal police force.

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth is due to address the decision publicly in Vancouver at 11:45 a.m. PT. CBC will stream his reaction live.

The decision will come after nearly two years of feuding between the B.C. government and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke — who campaigned in the 2022 municipal election on a promise of keeping the RCMP — over the future of policing in B.C.’s second largest and fastest growing municipality.

More to come.
