LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A major project to connect Sunrise Manor to Henderson through expanding Hollywood Boulevard begins. County and city leaders broke ground on the two-part project on Tuesday, May 21.
A plan to better connect these parts of the valley has been in the works for years and is now getting closer to reality.
The $74 million project will expand Hollywood Boulevard from Vegas Valley Drive to Galleria Drive with bridges over a wash and improved access to Clark County Wetlands Park. Once it’s complete it will give drivers an alternative route from Boulder Highway or the I-515.
Both county and city leaders agree this project will help improve access across the valley.
“Opening it up with this project is really going to change the lives of people in east Las Vegas,” Clark County Commissioner Chairman Tick Segerblom of District E explained. “It’s going to really open access to Wetlands Park. Wetlands Park is really such an underused and underappreciated resource.”
“It’s great that the county is taking this on and making this happen because it will impact and help residents in Henderson,” Carrie Cox, of Henderson City Council Ward 3 said.
The project will be completed in two phases. Phase one will take a year to expand Hollywood Boulevard to four lanes, adding new sidewalks, bike lanes, streetlights, and a roundabout.
The second phase is where environmental concerns come up with Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson of District G addressing them during the groundbreaking.
“The second phase of course will be the thing that ties it all up. There will be bridges built. There will be a bridge across Wetlands Park,” he said. “There will be bridges that enable the movement of wildlife so that any of the wildlife that is attracted to Wetlands Park will still have a way to get over there.”
The first phase of the project costs $12.3 million and is expected to be complete by June 30, 2025. Phase two is expected to begin in 2026 but they are waiting on the environmental reports so they can finish the designs.
