Departing Barcelona manager Xavi has said that he has no regrets after being sacked from his position by the club and claimed he was proud of himself and calm. The Barca legend was shown the door by the club on May 24, Friday in a surprise move by the board. Xavi’s last game as manager of Barcelona will be against Sevilla on May 26.
Speaking to the reporters, as quoted by Reuters, Xavi said he tried to do his best and felt it was like an apprenticeship for life. The Barca legend said that the last few days haven’t been easy but he is fine with things and has a clear conscience.
“I have no regrets. I have tried to do my best. We have worked with a lot of love for this club. I’m a Barca fan for life… It’s an apprenticeship for the future,” Xavi told a press conference on Saturday.
“These are complicated days, they have not been easy, but I’m fine. I have a clear conscience, I’m proud of myself and calm,” he added.
Xavi had supposedly angered the Barca board with his statements on the club’s financial situation. He went on to state that he is happy as he won two titles, including the LaLiga with the club.
“It has not been an easy time because of the state of the club. I am happy because I have done a good job – we have won two titles, more successes and won important matches,” Xavi said.
What Joan Laporta told Xavi
Xavi revealed that Barcelona club president Joan Laporta told him that club needs a change in direction and he was left with no choice but to accept the demand. He reiterated that he will remain like a fan of the club.
“Laporta has told me why he thinks the club needs a change of direction and I accept it, he is the one who decides. I have no choice. I am a club man,” Xavi said.
“I believed in the squad and that we could do interesting things, but it wasn’t to be. I wish (Laporta) the best of luck and from now on I will be just another fan.”
Xavi’s sacking came as a shock to many as he was forced by Barca to reconsider his decision to leave the club at the end of the season and extend his stay last month.
