Janhvi Kapoor, gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Mr. & Mrs. Mahi alongside Rajkummar Rao, recently opened up about her desire for box-office success. In an exclusive interview with The Free Press Journal, Kapoor discussed her past theatrical releases, her flourishing OTT presence, and the driving force behind her diverse role choices.

Janhvi Kapoor speaks about box office setbacks and OTT recognition
While acknowledging her theatrical box office setbacks after her debut film Dhadak, Janhvi highlights the limitations of Roohi, which was released during the pandemic with reduced theatre capacity. She asserted, “I always want the numerical conversion of the films I do or the roles I decide to play. I constantly seek validation for my work.”
She added, “My last theatrical hit was my debut film Dhadak. Roohi came out in the pandemic but since we opened up with 50% capacity, it was a success for the times we were living in. But I don’t count it as a success. Mili didn’t do well at the box office. Once I get that numerical validation, then I start to believe that I am doing well.”
Varied roles fuel passion for acting
Despite the box office challenges, Kapoor speaks about her unwavering commitment to portraying diverse characters. “The constant hunger of doing varied roles justifies for me to be an actor,” she stated. She further added, “Through my work, I learned to fly a helicopter, I fully learned how to play cricket as a sport, I spent 21 days in a freezer with a rat. I even spent so many days in Patiala and saw the interiors of my country in Punjab and Udaipur for that matter. I feel lucky to have gotten so much exposure. I could speak more Telugu than as a child because of the film I am doing. That’s where the fuel comes from I guess.”
About Mr. & Mrs. Mahi
Speaking of the film, directed by Sharan Sharma, it is slated to release on May 31. It is going to be Janhvi’s fourth theatrical release.
